SA Mare Liberum's expedition: deep-sea robot entered the car deck of Estonia

On Sunday afternoon SA Mare Liberum created at the initiative of the relatives of those killed in the Estonia disaster sent a deep-sea robot to the car deck of the sunken ferry, which discovered that two doors leading to the lower decks are intact and closed.

"We believe, this is an important discovery," said Margus Kurm, the head of SA Mare Liberum and the expedition. "We were able to film the two doors on the right side of the car deck, using which people could move between upper and lower decks. It turned out that they are intact and closed," added Kurm.

Margus Kurm explained that before starting the expedition, the research team posed seven main questions that they hope to get answers to. "One of the questions was how exactly the different parts of the ship were filled with water, that is, how the water got to the decks below the car deck. Previous research suggested that the doors on the car deck were shattered by water pressure. Since now it turns out that the doors are still intact, the water must have got under the car deck from somewhere else," Kurm explained the importance of the discovery. It was not possible to examine all the doors in the central part of the car deck, since the access is blocked by damaged vehicles.

When asked how this discovery will affect the further work of the expedition, Kurm replied that future expert studies can no longer simply assume that the doors of the central section of the car deck were destroyed: "Calculations and simulations must now be carried out on the assumption that the doors are intact."

According to the available information, Mare Liberum expedition is the first, during which a robot penetrated so deeply into the car deck of Estonia, while carefully studying and filming it. The robot travelled along the car deck for about 50 meters. This morning research was temporarily put on hold when the robot got stuck for a while as its screws were entangled in a plastic bag. "Since the inspection of the car deck is dangerous and the visibility is very poor, we probably will not go there again," explained Kurm.

Mare Liberum expedition on the research vessel RS SENTINEL began investigating the crash site of Estonia on Wednesday last week. For six days, the wreck and its surroundings were surveyed using multibeam sonar and an underwater robot. Yesterday divers also went underwater, but due to poor visibility they had to stop working. In addition, underwater robots take thousands of pictures of Estonia in order to create a detailed 3D image using photogrammetric technology.

A total of 43 people will take part in the expedition, including 18 ship crew members and six media representatives. The rest of the participants will be involved in the planning and execution of the underwater work. The ship has various sonars, two groups of underwater robots and four divers with the necessary research and recording equipment. All the necessary auxiliary equipment is also available, such as a crane, an airlift for loose soil removal and various measuring instruments.

The diving expedition will be conducted using RS SENTINEL. The ship belongs to the German company RS OFFSHORE which is managed and owned by Kurt Rohde and operates under the Maltese flag. RS SENTINEL is a vessel adapted for underwater and diving operations. It was thoroughly rebuilt in 2010 and equipped with modern equipment and technology.

Materials gathered in the course of the investigation project will be analysed by dr. Andrzej Jasionowski, whose Singapore company SophusQuorum Pte. Ltd. specialises in expert examinations of sea accidents. Dr. Jasionowski has already dealt with topics concerning Estonia before – in 2005-2008 he was a member of the scientific consortium SSPA, which conducted a number of different studies regarding Estonia under the order of the Swedish government. Scientific analysis should be ready by next spring.

The activities and the investigation project of SA Mare Liberum are funded from donations and the sale of media rights. The biggest supporter from Estonia is Postimees Grupp which among others owns such media channels as Postimees, Kanal 2, BNS and Radio Kuku.

SA Mare Liberum is a fund that was founded in July this year upon an initiative of close relatives of survivors. The manager of the fund is Margus Kurm. The members of the council are Piret Kergandberg, Raivo Hellerma and Carl Eric Laantee Reintamm.

Information, pictures, and video gathered in the course of the expedition will be published on SA Mare Liberum website: www.mare-liberum.ee
