There wasn’t anything to eat or drink, or any place to sleep, he said, so he was going home.Morocco has not issued an official response to the surge in crossings or Spanish claims that the two countries are cooperating on returning people. Friday is the day of Morocco’s annual allegiance ceremony, one of the country’s most important state occasions.

Moroccan authorities appeared to be tightening efforts to prevent people from reaching the country’s north, where the border with Cueta is. In the capital of Rabat on Thursday, security forces were stopping some passengers from boarding trains heading in that direction. On Friday, the high-speed service between Rabat and the northern city of Tangier was still operating, but local trains on the route had been canceled. At stations in both cities, members of the Auxiliary Forces were monitoring travelers."
